Pre-shipment Inspection: Olefin (Polypropylene) Fabric — 27,000 m, 3 colours | August 2024 | PASS

Report No. OIS20240829PSI-01. Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) conducted on 29 August 2024 at a factory in China. Inspector: Paddy.

Subject of inspection: olefin (polypropylene-fibre) fabric, valued for its resistance to UV light, moisture and stains and used for upholstery, outdoor furniture and technical textile products. Order: 27,000 m in three colours — light grey, green and brown. Production 100% finished, about 25,000 m (85%) packed at the time of inspection.

Inspection standard: ANSI/ASQ Z1.4-2008 (MIL-STD-105E). Sample: 1,000 m in total — 500 m light grey, 350 m green and 150 m brown. AQL limits were applied separately for each colour.

Measured on the rolls: overall width 154–156 cm and usable width 152 cm in all colours, weight 201–203 gsm (requirement: about 200 gsm), thickness 0.63–0.65 mm. Roll length ranged from about 92 to 111 m and net roll weight from 24.8 to 33 kg depending on colour.

On-site tests passed: weight and thickness check, tension test, dry and wet rub test, washing test, colour-fastness check and waterproofing test. The waterproofing test was filmed for all three colours.

Defects (every colour within AQL): 0 critical, 2 major and 8 minor. Light grey: 3 minor (coarse yarn). Green: 1 major (broken yarn) and 3 minor (knot, coarse yarn). Brown: 1 major (broken yarn) and 2 minor (knot, coarse yarn). In each colour the defect count stayed below the allowed maximum and no critical defects were found.

Remarks to be resolved before shipment: (1) about 2,000 m of the green fabric was not yet packed at the time of inspection; (2) the shade of the brown fabric differed slightly from the factory sample and needs confirming against the client's approved sample.

Report status: Pending — this relates only to packing and shade confirmation, not to workmanship. AQL workmanship result: PASS. The remarks are resolved before shipment, and goods ship after client approval.

Frequently asked questions

What is olefin fabric and what is it used for?

Olefin fabric is made from polypropylene fibre. It is valued for its resistance to UV light, moisture and stains, so it is used for upholstery, outdoor furniture and technical textile products.

Which tests were performed on the olefin fabric?

Weight (201–203 gsm) and thickness (0.63–0.65 mm) were checked, and tension, dry and wet rub, washing, colour-fastness and waterproofing tests were carried out. All passed.

What does Pending mean if the AQL result is PASS?

Pending related to packing and shade: about 2,000 m of green fabric was not yet packed and the brown shade differed slightly from the factory sample. Production was 100% complete and the AQL workmanship result is PASS.

Which defects were found and are they within the AQL limit?

In the 1,000 m sample the inspection found 0 critical, 2 major (broken yarn) and 8 minor defects (knots, coarse yarn). In each of the three colours the defect count stayed below the allowed maximum under ANSI/ASQ Z1.4-2008.

What is an AQL pre-shipment inspection from China?

An AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) inspection is a statistical sample check of goods conducted at the Chinese factory before the goods leave the facility. Oriental IMEX conducts inspections to ANSI/ASQ Z1.4-2008 standard, G-II plan. Report with PASS/HOLD/FAIL decision delivered in 24 hours.

How long does an inspection take and when is the report ready?
